How Can You Differentiate Between Cluster Fly vs House Fly?

Having flies around the house is both irritating and unhygienic. Both of these flies emerge in the summer and become a problem when they move indoors. Like other pests, they seek refuge in human homes when the weather gets cold. This prolongs their lifespan and the insect season beyond what is natural. Understanding the differences between the fly species and what draws them into the home can help you get rid of them and prevent them from coming back. If you need help, do not hesitate to give us a call. We offer cluster fly and house fly treatments across the Peterborough area.

Cluster flies can be differentiated by the stripes and lines on their backs. Their thoraxes are also covered in golden hairs, while their eyes appear red to red-brown. Cluster flies typically measure somewhere between 7 and 10mm in length, slightly larger and darker than house flies. One may also notice that they move more slowly than house flies. House flies, on the other hand, are 4 to 7.5mm long, with grey colouring and four black stripes on their backs. Finally, house flies are quieter and fly more often. As their names would suggest, cluster flies tend to cluster themselves on windowpanes and make a lot of noise.

How to Get Rid of Flies

Fly traps are easy to make at home. Mix apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap into a glass, so that the mixture is about an inch deep. Then, cover the top of the glass with plastic wrap. Poke a few small holes into the plastic wrap, then place the glass wherever you see flies. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar. But, once inside the glass, they will be unable to get back out. If you don’t have any vinegar, try using sugar water, honey, wine, or a piece of fruit.

In addition to homemade traps, you can use sticky traps from the hardware store. These can be placed on surfaces like windowsills and tables or hung from the ceiling to catch the bugs mid-flight. Both homemade and store-bought traps are highly effective. However, it is important that you address the causes of the infestation. Have a look at your windows and see if any of their screens are broken. Then, inspect your doors and window frames for cracks. Seal and repair entry points to keep the bugs out. You should also keep the house clean and take the garbage out every day to remove attractants.
