peterborough wall vent screening inspection 01

Mouse Activity and Exterior Exclusion – Peterborough

Job Overview

Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey residential house with red brick exterior and attached garage
Problem: Mouse activity inside wall cavities
Service: Mouse treatment and exterior exclusion
Visits: Three

Summary

We responded to reports of scratching sounds within interior walls. An initial inspection confirmed high mouse activity throughout the home. Treatment was completed over multiple visits, followed by approved exterior exclusion work to address identified entry points and reduce the risk of reinfestation.

Background / Property Context

The property is a two-storey home with mixed exterior materials, including brick, siding, and multiple utility and wall penetrations at ground level. Winter conditions during the initial visit limited visibility of some exterior details due to snow cover.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing scratching noises coming from within the walls, indicating active rodent movement inside the structure.

Inspection & Findings

Interior inspection identified a high level of mouse activity consistent with nesting and travel within wall cavities. Exterior inspection identified several potential entry points, including unprotected weep vents, open wall vents, gaps along siding, and soffit-to-wall intersections that could allow rodent access.

Photos from the inspection show:

  • A visible gap at the brick foundation line consistent with a potential rodent entry point.
  • Multiple wall and plumbing vents without protective screening.
  • Ground-level utility penetrations adjacent to the foundation.
  • Wall vent covers showing no rodent-proof reinforcement.

Cause Analysis

Rodents are able to access structures through small exterior openings, particularly around vents and building transitions. The combination of multiple unprotected vents and gaps along siding and soffit intersections provided accessible entry routes. Winter conditions can increase indoor rodent activity as mice seek warmth and shelter.

Treatment / Removal

Mouse treatment was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. Tamper-resistant bait stations were placed in interior and exterior areas with high activity. Follow-up service confirmed significant feeding, indicating active population reduction.

Exclusion & Repairs

After treatment, the homeowner approved exterior exclusion work. Our team completed the following:

  • Installation of stainless steel inserts in eight weep vents
  • Sealing of siding gaps using galvanized steel mesh and exterior-grade silicone
  • Sealing approximately forty-eight feet of soffit-to-wall gaps using galvanized steel mesh and silicone

All work was completed to physically block rodent entry while maintaining proper ventilation and drainage.

Outcome & Confirmation

Following exclusion and rebaiting, no further mouse activity was reported. All identified entry points were sealed, and the exterior was rechecked to confirm completed exclusion measures.

Technician Notes

The service was completed over three visits by our technician, Grant. Initial winter conditions limited some exterior visibility, but all accessible entry points were addressed once conditions allowed. No limitations were encountered during treatment or exclusion work.
