Mouse Treatment Case Study – Attic Activity in Peterborough

Job Overview

Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Two-story, detached brick house with multiple garages
Problem: Nocturnal scratching sounds reported in the attic from multiple areas
Service: Mouse treatment
Visits: 2

Summary

We completed a two-visit mouse treatment at a detached residential property in Peterborough after the homeowner reported ongoing attic noises consistent with rodent activity. Our team focused on interior attic treatment and exterior monitoring, with entry points identified during inspection. Exclusion work was discussed but not approved at the time of service.

Background / Property Context

The home is a two-story, red-brick structure with attached garage areas and multiple exterior wall penetrations. The property includes foundation-level vents and utility openings that can be vulnerable to rodent entry if left unscreened or damaged.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported scratching and movement sounds in the attic during nighttime hours. The sounds appeared to come from more than one location, suggesting active mouse movement across the attic space.

Inspection & Findings

An exterior inspection identified several open or unprotected wall vents around the structure. These openings were consistent with common mouse entry points, particularly at foundation and wall-vent locations. Interior attic inspection showed areas of higher rodent activity suitable for bait station placement.

Cause Analysis

Mouse activity was likely driven by accessible exterior openings combined with seasonal behavior as rodents seek shelter in cooler months. Open wall vents and utility penetrations provided direct access into wall cavities and the attic. The size and layout of the structure allowed mice to move through multiple areas once inside.

Treatment / Removal

During the first visit, our licensed exterminator placed tamper-proof bait stations in areas of elevated activity within the attic. Commercial-grade rodenticide was used in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. An exterior bait station, weighted and secured for safety, was also installed to monitor and reduce exterior rodent pressure.

Exclusion & Repairs

Exclusion options were presented to address the identified wall vent openings. The homeowner was provided with a quote to seal and screen these areas but chose not to proceed with exclusion work at that time. No structural modifications were performed.

Outcome & Confirmation

At the second visit, exterior bait stations showed high feeding activity and were rebaited accordingly. No limitations were encountered during service. Continued monitoring was recommended due to the presence of unsealed exterior entry points.

Technician Notes

Grant completed both visits, focusing on attic treatment and exterior monitoring. Activity levels observed at follow-up indicated ongoing exterior mouse pressure, reinforcing the recommendation for future exclusion work to prevent re-entry.
